If
you work on your Search Engine Optimization, then your website will eventually
be indexed by Google and Bing/Yahoo. So, there is no need to submit your
website to them, however, if you do then your website will be indexed faster.
Have you noticed that when you first put new content on your website, that it sometimes takes a long time for it to be crawled and indexed.
Have you noticed that when you first put new content on your website, that it sometimes takes a long time for it to be crawled and indexed.
There are ways of
getting it crawled and indexed a little faster, and here they are.
Submit
an XML sitemap to the search engines
This
is a bit of overkill for just one new page of content. If you do this after you
have quite a few new pages over a stretch of time, or if you do this after
adding a new category, then it may be acceptable. But, for just one page it is
a bit of overkill. The likes of Google will often get to reading your sitemap
(hence indexing your new page) within six weeks of you submitting it (normally
within two weeks).
Update
your website routinely
The
search engines are made up of one big computer program. Since it is a computer
program (robotic if you will), it will behave in at least a partially
predictable way. The routine crawling and indexing of sites is one of these
predictable ways. If a website is an authority site then it will be crawled and
indexed daily in order to find any new information. Your website will be
crawled based upon how often the search engines think your website is updated.
For
example, if a blog exists for a long time and the blogger adds a new post every
week, then the search engines will learn to crawl and index the website every
week. If you pick a date every month to update your website and then stick to
it, you will find that the search engine will get the feel for your routine and
will start to crawl and index your site monthly.
Link
to it from your other web pages
As a
further addition to the point above, you should always make sure that your new
web page has other internal pages linking to it. Otherwise, the search engines
will never find it and never be able to crawl and index it. The new page should
have at least one internal link pointing to it. But, if you want to play it
safe then why not have three internal links pointing to it?
Link
to your page from other websites
As
other websites are crawled, the search engine will read the links on it. It
will then follow the links to any other websites and crawl/index them too. So
it is advantageous if you get your new content linked up to a number of other
websites.
Other
websites are going to be getting crawled all the time. So, all you need to do
is link from a lot of websites and there is a chance that your website will be
crawled too. This is more of a numbers game, but it is also important that you
link from relevant sites so that it does not damage the SEO of your website.
Try
to link from websites that are related to your own, and you may not wish to
bother with websites that have clearly not been updated in a long while. For
example, if you see that the website has not been updated since 2007, there is
little chance that your link is going to be crawled any time this year.
Link
from websites that are frequently crawled
There
are popular sites, well maintained blogs and authority sites that are crawled
very frequently. These are going to be crawled and have their links crawled
more frequently, which is going to improve your chances of getting your link
and your new content crawled and indexed more quickly. Getting links from these
sorts of sites is fairly difficult, but if you do it then you will quickly have
your content crawled and indexed. Just make sure you link from a relevant page
so that it does not damage your website’s SEO, otherwise it is not worth the
effort.
